The IUSN Foundation is internationally known for its work in
providing charitable benefits that assist emerging nations in their efforts to
enter the global internet community. A current example of this mission-driven charitable model can be found
in the Southwest Pacific, where IUSN funding supports a wide range of benefits
for the government and people of Niue, including:
Free Internet and WiFi service;
- High-tech training and education for residents;
- Funding of local sports teams; and
- Private sector job creation with the island’s
sole Internet service provider funded by the IUSN Foundation, known as Internet
Niue.
- IUSN is able to fund free Internet service for the 1,400
residents of Niue - the only country in the world with free Internet
- through income received from the sale of .NU domain names in
Scandinavia (where nu means "now") by
business partner WorldNames, Inc., which operates the .NU domain.
- IUSN has been highly successful in fulfilling its charitable
mission. Its services are
efficient and free and its network is continually being upgraded and
expanded. No other Pacific Island
has been so successful in providing services to its Internet community, despite
some islands having highly marketable country codes.
In support of its charitable mission, and to stay on the
cutting edge of Internet technology innovations, IUSN maintains a leadership
role in all of the major international Internet governing bodies including the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names
and Numbers (ICANN), Internet
Governance Forum(IGF), The Internet
Society (ISOC), Asia Pacific
Top Level Domain Association (APTLD), and Internet
Engineering Task Force (IETF).
